Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is a time for reflection, renewal, and celebration. As families gather around the table to mark the occasion, the importance of a beautiful, meaningful table setting cannot be understated. A thoughtfully designed table not only creates a warm and inviting atmosphere but also enhances the festive spirit of the holiday. One way to elevate your Rosh Hashanah table is by incorporating the symbolism of the Shiv’at Haminim—the Seven Species of the Land of Israel—into your décor. These natural elements, deeply rooted in Jewish tradition, can be used to create an elegant and spiritually resonant setting.

Rosh Hashanah Table Décor: Color Palette

Choose a color scheme that reflects both the season and the holiday. Whites, creams, and golds create a timeless and luxurious look, while adding natural hues like deep reds, greens, and browns brings warmth and richness. The key is balance—using accent colors sparingly to create visual harmony.

Rosh Hashanah and High Holidays: A Foundation of Symbolism

The Seven Species mentioned in the Torah (Deuteronomy 8:8) are wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. These crops represent the fertility and abundance of the land of Israel and serve as a beautiful way to bring both heritage and harvest to your table. Here are some ideas for incorporating each of these elements:

Wheat & Barley: These grains symbolize sustenance and are often included in challah, the braided bread traditionally eaten during the holiday meal. You can elevate this symbol by serving beautifully braided round challah, symbolizing the cyclical nature of the year, displayed on a decorative bread plate with wheat stalks or barley accents woven into the napkins or table runner. I often use the Décor Vase with dried wheat -today it is easy to get these as they are sold for decoration in many flower shops or online.

Grapes & Wine: Grapes represent joy and fruitfulness. Incorporate clusters of grapes into the centerpiece or arrange them on platters with other fresh fruit for guests to enjoy. If you live in Israel or a Mediterranean weather-like area you may be able to get the fresh leaves which makes a beautiful fresh décor.  Wine, a staple of the Rosh Hashanah meal, can be elevated by using elegant glassware. ‘Oshia’ Kiddush Cup will add a special sophistication and deep meaning to your table.

Figs: Figs, symbolizing sweetness and prosperity, can be used in both the meal and as decoration. The fresh figs with its deep purple color makes you Rosh Hashanah table setting one of a kind. If you can’t  get the fresh ones -there are tiny dried ones that aren’t flattened and can  be used in small bowls along the table, or integrate them into a natural centerpiece with greenery and candles for a rustic, yet refined look.

Pomegranates: Pomegranates hold deep symbolism in Judaism, representing abundance and righteousness, as their many seeds are often likened to the 613 commandments. A whole pomegranate, halved to showcase its seeds, can serve as a stunning, organic decorative element.  I like to dry them out when they are small and spread them on the table. If you live in Israel you may look for a small version of a bush of pomegranates, not for eating,  and use it  with the branch in a décor vase.  Another way is incorporating pomegranate motifs on napkins, plates, or glassware adds a thematic touch to the setting. The rich red hues also create a striking contrast against more neutral tones like whites, golds, or silvers.

Olives & Olive Oil:  The olive tree is a symbol for peace – as appeared in Noah’s story in Genesis. It is also one of the most characteristic of the Land of Israel and it is  one of the nicest woods to use for artifacts. I use sustainable wood for my Challah boards combined with the salt dish made for dipping the challah in salt on Shabbat eve. It can be used with a honey dish for Rosh Hashanah. The ‘Britt’ Challah boards are all original native trees of the Land of Israel and as a centerpiece will upgrade your Rosh Hashanah table setting. A well-crafted centerpiece is the focal point of the table, and this one is one of a kind !

Dates:  Frankly, I have never used dates for Rosh Hashanah table setting but it is a good idea for this year! The fresh fruit is yellow-orange and just the right one to remind us how much we miss them.

Honey and Apples: The custom of eating honey dipped in apples first appeared in France in the 15th century. It is an Ashkenazi custom that spread later to other Jewish communities. The description of the Land of Israel as ” The land of milk and honey” by the twelve spies (Numbers, 13) made the honey a major substance for the blessing for a sweet new year. There are plenty of beehives and amateur beekeepers nowadays so if you could find some honeycomb it would be a beautiful addition to your table.

Rosh Hashanah Hostess Gifts

Adding personal touches, like small blessings for each guest, creates a more intimate and meaningful atmosphere. Some hostesses add a small gift for each guest putting it near or on one’s plate. The Hamsa keychain is a perfect gift for a new year’s blessing to give anyone.
